What are the top 8 essential oils for winter months?

Using essential oils during the winter can have many benefits for the mind, body, and soul. Essential oils are known for their ability to support the immune system, clear the respiratory system, and provide a sense of warmth and comfort during the colder months. They can also support a connection with plants through the aroma when the plants are not in season, or it’s hard to get outside

However, it's important to use essential oils safely. Some essential oils that are more commonly used in the winter months are warming, such as ginger and clove, but could also have higher sensitizing risks or other cautionary properties. It's also important to keep in mind that essential oils are highly concentrated plant extracts, and can cause skin irritation or allergic reactions if used improperly. It's always recommended to do a patch test before using an essential oil. If you are planning to use them topically to follow safe topical dilution, or if you plan to diffuse, to follow safe dilution times. Some people may also have underlying medical conditions or take medications that could interact with essential oils. It is best to consult with a certified aromatherapist and inform your health team that you will be using aromatherapy as part of your complimentary health routine. 


It can be hard to narrow down our top oils for anything, as each person is individual and unique, however, here are our top 8 essential oils that we like to use over the winter months.

  1. Peppermint oil for respiratory support and to fight off colds and flu.

  2. Eucalyptus oil for decongestion and to help with sinus issues.

  3. Lemon oil for boosting the immune system and fighting off germs.

  4. Rosemary oil for supporting respiratory health and fighting off winter bugs.

  5. Thyme oil for its antiviral and antiseptic properties.

  6. Tea tree oil for its antimicrobial properties and ability to fight off winter bugs.

  7. Sweet Orange oil for its immune-boosting properties and ability to fight off colds and flu.

  8. Ginger oil for its warming properties and ability to support the immune system

Being able to reach the upper and lower parts of the respiratory system through inhalation of essential oils due to their volatility, many can help with opening airways. Since many are also antimicrobial, antibacterial, and/or antiviral, they offer effective support in respiratory tract infections. A study by Horváth G, Ács K, highlighted the role of essential oils in the treatment of respiratory tract diseases. 

Winter months can be cold and dreary, however, having the fresh aromas of essential oils to enjoy can also help with soothing the long days and bringing a little bit of nature inside to enjoy.
