Essential Oils And The Art Of Winter Survival
Embracing the Snow
This week has been filled with excitement as we finally have snow after a winter that barely showed up last year. Although it disrupts our schedules, it's a reminder to adapt and find joy in the little things. Parents can sometimes be left scrambling when snow storms hit, and schools are closed. Working while kids are home isn’t always easy, so here are our go-to’s in this situation.
Grounding Oils for Comfort
When feeling overwhelmed, turn to your "happy oils." These are the scents that ground you and bring you comfort. Think about what scents light you up. If you like woodsy oils like Nikki, oils like vetiver and cedarwood are her go-to’s. Woodsy oils such as Douglas fir or black spruce are also great choices. If you prefer florals, consider jasmine or rose, though I know they can be pricey, geranium is a more affordable option. Citrus oils like bergamot, lime, or sweet orange are uplifting too, as are herbaceous options like rosemary and basil.
Finding Focus Amidst the Chaos
With little ones around, maintaining focus can be tricky. If you often hear, "Mama, come check this out!" which is adorable but can pull your attention away from work. To help regain your focus, use oils like rosemary, lime, and spearmint. These oils help with concentrating and bring your attention back to to task at hand when you feel scattered. Lavender and peppermint are also effective for enhancing focus.
Relieving Sore Muscles
This week has involved a lot of snow shovelling—definitely a workout! For sore muscles, some good oils could include rosemary, black pepper, or eucalyptus. Frankincense is fantastic for its anti-inflammatory properties, while copaiba is another excellent choice. We often see blends that include wintergreen, please be cautious with this oil due to potential contraindications, and stick to the oils you know work for you.
Supporting Immunity
As you shuffle between the warm indoors and the cold outdoors, it's vital to consider your immune system. Oils like rosemary, lavender, sweet orange, and thyme are great for boosting immunity. They offer antibacterial and antiviral properties, helping to keep germs at bay. The beauty of aromatherapy is that one oil can serve multiple purposes, so don't hesitate to experiment!
Creating Your Personal Blend
Consider blending oils to create a personal inhaler or "sniffy stick." If you’re using essential oils topically, make sure you’re diluting them appropriately for your health and age. For a healthy adult, a 2% blend is often more than enough. 4 drops in 10ml of carrier oil is all you need for this. Remember you don’t want to use too many oils throughout the day either as you can then overstimulate your nervous system, having the opposite effect of what you want. Moderation is key!
As we embrace this winter wonderland, we would love to hear what oils you're using to stay grounded and focused this season. Let’s support each other through these chilly days with the power of aromatherapy!
